THE DISILLUSIONED INSIDER
I was crushing it at work.
Warehouse work during peak season. November through January. Twelve-hour shifts. Fourteen-hour shifts sometimes. Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Pre-Christmas chaos. The company running at maximum capacity and me running harder than everyone else.
I showed up every day. Never called in. Picked faster than anyone on the line. Solved problems on the fly. Helped teammates when they were drowning. Stayed late without being asked. Came in early without complaining.
Three months of sustained brutality. Body aching. The kind of exhaustion that only warehouse workers understand.
So when January rolled around and the chaos finally died down, we waited for the recognition event.
Then it came.
They gathered us in the warehouse and handed out bags.
Inside: an electric-yellow t-shirt (the kind that's so bright you can't wear it anywhere), a company-branded keychain, and a pizza party after the event.
That's it.
A neon t-shirt. A keychain. And pizza.
I stood there holding that bag and felt something break inside me.
Not anger. Disbelief.
The message was loud and clear: "This is what you're worth. Something we bought in bulk. A t-shirt no one will wear. A keychain you'll lose in a month. A pizza party we're calling recognition. Something that required zero thought."
I watched people's faces. The same realization hitting everyone at once.

That's when I got angry.
THE STRATEGIST
I started asking different questions: What does recognition actually mean?

I started designing gifts and messaging around specific moments. I worked with companies to identify the moments that actually meant something in their culture. I paired thoughtful gifts with personalized stories—not generic "congrats" but actual acknowledgment of specific contribution.
The response was immediate. People felt genuinely seen. Not just acknowledged. Seen.
Retention improved. Engagement shifted. Culture stopped being something HR talked about—it became something people actually believed in.
